A. Select a
topic/theme that takes at least two weeks to cover. Examples: Civil War,
Fractions, Plants, Short Stories, etc.
B. Divide
the theme/topic into subtopics.
C.
For each subtopic, develop a goal or
goals.
D.
Once all goals are listed, take each
goal (one at a time) & create objectives. Cross-reference each objective

E.
Go back to the goals and develop instructional
procedures for each. These instructional procedures would be the big things you
will do to teach the goals (leave the little things, like working problems on
board, etc. for the lesson plans). Examples of “big things” would be an inquiry
lesson (where you would include the inquiry question), a Socratic seminar
(where you would include the topic and leadoff question), a debate (where you
would include the debate resolution), etc.
F.
Make a materials list where all special
materials needed to teach the unit are listed.
G.
Assessment. List the various ways that student
learning will be assessed. Examples: Homework assignments, projects, class activities,
and unit test.
