Topic: Propaganda
Techniques
Set: Three ads (campaign, public service,
& commercial) are shown to students. In everyday language, students are
asked to identify the “selling” strategy used by the advertisers in each ad.
Objectives:
1) Tsw define propaganda.
2) Tsw define and describe four propaganda techniques: appeal
to authority, bandwagon effect, glittering generalities, and transfer.
3) Tsw recognize the four propaganda techniques in
advertisements.
Instructional
Procedures
- Task Division. Divide the propaganda
topic into four categories: (a) appeal to authority, (b) bandwagon effect,
(c) glittering generalities, & (d) transfer.
- Home Groups. Divide the class of
16 into four groups (a group per propaganda technique). Assign to each
home group member a different propaganda technique.
- Expert Group Meeting. Students with the same propaganda
technique meet to learn about their topic and discuss ways to teach it to
others. Teacher provides guiding questions. (Note: This would be
attached.)
- Reassemble as Home Groups. Each
expert teaches his/her technique.
- Home Group Problem Solving. Each
home group is given three new ads. In each, they are to identify the
propaganda techniques that are used. The teacher calls on certain students
to place one of their ads on the Elmo and present their findings.
