Teaching: I teach Latin American, U.S., and World history at MTSU, with a focus on the past of Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. I use visuals in the lecture segments to provide a background for topics that many are not familiar with. Student discussions are essential in my classes. Students deliver short presentations and work in groups. We discuss primary sources and critically assess the historiography in the upper-division courses. Please see the Course Index for more details.

Research: My research focuses on the viceregal court in colonial Mexico. I am interested in how "corruption," the law, and the state changed in the eighteenth century. I am currently finishing a book on the court in the mid-eighteenth century. I argue that the viceroys forged an alliance with Indians against the traditional oligarchies to change the religious framework of New Spain. In many ways my work is therefore also an analysis of the origins of the independence. Please see my Curriculum Vitae for publications and scholarly presentations.
