Developing a Syllabus

When developing a course syllabus:

  1. Anticipate student questions, include;
    • a short, personalized welcome note
    • instructor information
    • textbook and course material details (supplementary course readings and web links)
    • a course description and overview of instructional methods
    • course goals and objectives
    • course grading and feedback details
    • prerequisites
    • relevant policies
    • special course features
    • support services, including access services for disabled students
    • caveats, such as "The University reserves the right to amend course outlines from time to time without notice."
  2. Build on course and program objectives, include;
    • a link to other course or department policies that can be found online.
    • a course calendar
    • course objectives
  3. Collaborate with other faculty and department heads, instructional designers
    • Develop a specific policy for developing online syllabi
    • Give faculty members the option to develop their own syllabi or to collaborate with other members who teach the same course or with other MTSU staff.
