Developing a Syllabus
When developing a course syllabus:
- Anticipate student questions, include;
- a short, personalized welcome note
- instructor information
- textbook and course material details (supplementary
course readings and web links)
- a course description and overview of instructional
methods
- course goals and objectives
- course grading and feedback details
- prerequisites
- relevant policies
- special course features
- support services, including access services for disabled
students
- caveats, such as "The University reserves the right to
amend course outlines from time to time without notice."
- Build on course and program objectives, include;
- a link to other course or department policies that can
be found online.
- a course calendar
- course objectives
- Collaborate with other faculty and department
heads, instructional designers
- Develop a specific policy for developing online syllabi
- Give faculty members the option to develop their own
syllabi or to collaborate with other members who teach the
same course or with other MTSU staff.
