Tentative Schedule of Assignments

All assignments refer to the St. Martin's text unless otherwise specified. Assignments from the Portfolio e-book, primarily for the use of sample essays and for the details for Essay 3, are found by following the links provided in this syllabus and on the website; there is also a link to the complete text from the Content area of our website.

Homework writings and notes/outlines for tests should be completed in full prior to the class for which they are due. Unexcused late work will not be accepted and will not earn any credit.

Introduction to CAI English 1010: Portfolio Composition and D2L.
For Wednesday, print out the course syllabus and course schedule for HW credit. Also, print out the Student Contract (see D2L Content, Miscellaneous Forms for an attachment) and bring to class ready to turn in. Bring your preferred digital storing device to class (jump drive, etc.)

For Friday, share personal information on your D2L User Homepage for HW credit --due by classtime Friday. For the specific information required, visit the instructions in Getting Started or in Homepage How-to in Content.

Jan 18 DUE:
1. Hard copies of syllabus and schedule.
2. Read the syllabus and be prepared to ask questions pertaining to course rules and procedures.
3. Read "Introduction to CAI Portfolio English 1010", "Four Portfolio Writing Assignments", and "Basic Requirements for Portfolio Assignments."
4. Be ready to ask questions about the portfolio system and writing assignments.

IN-CLASS:
1. Show syllabus/schedule for HW credit
2. Set up folders for essays & portfolio in digital storing device.

Jan 20 DUE:
1. Read the assignment for Essay 1.
2. Read carefully the first part of chapter 2 in St. Martin's, Remembering an Event (14-39), including all sample essays.
3. Begin reading and taking notes/outlining St. Martin's chapters 14 (615-27) and 15 (628-38) omitting all exercises. A multiple choice test over the main ideas in this chapter will be given for which you will be able to use your notes/outline of the chapter.
4. Complete and submit Student Contract either in hard copy or through the Student Contract link from Content.
5. Complete your User Homepage.

IN-CLASS: Mini-lesson on MLA document formatting (bring your digital devices) referring to pp. 787-93. HW credit for User Homepages.

Week 2
Jan 23
DUE:
1. Write a list of the basic features of the essay genre about a remembered event (i.e., what should this type of essay accomplish and include?) for class discussion (40-41).
2. Write a list of possible topics for your own essay about a remembered event as suggested in the St. Martin's (28, 33, 38).

IN-CLASS:
1. Discussion of Inventing, Drafting, Revising: 12 Steps in Completing Essay Assignments.
2. Discussion of the assignment for Essay 1: Remembering an Event.
3. Reading and discussion of sample student essay The Death of Innocence, see Content or Portfolio (17-20), and St. Martin's essays as time allows.
4. HW credit for the two lists assigned for Essay 1.
Jan 25 DUE: Review your chapter 14 and 15 notes/outlines for the test.

IN-CLASS:
1. Some time to answer students questions about the reading material before the test.
2. Test 1 over St. Martin's chapters 14 and 15.
3. Explanation of The Twenty-one Most Common Grammatical/Mechanical Errors and
"Sentence-level Corrections: An Essay Requirement and Harbrace Handbook Assignment."

This is the last day to drop without a grade.
Jan 27 DUE:
1. Read the Guide to Writing for the essay (St. Martin's 40-47) and write lists, descriptions, and sketches as instructed. Be sure to write for the
recommended time limits! You should have several pages of invention writing to submit for homework credit.
2. Begin reading and taking notes/outlining St. Martin's chapter 13 (604-14)

IN-CLASS: Begin work on draft 1 of Essay 1 in class.
Week 3 Jan 30 DUE: Read and follow the guidelines for planning and writing draft 1, St. Martin's, 47-52.

IN-CLASS:
1. Explanation of the coversheet: "How to Complete the Essay Coversheet," including concepts of audience purpose, thesis, and the writers role.
2. Continue work in class on draft 1 of Essay 1 and start on coversheet for Essay 1 (See Content).

Feb 1
IN-CLASS:
1. Test 2 over St. Martin's chapter 13.
2. Introduction to peer group response. Peer groups announced.
3. Continue work on Draft 1 for Essay 1.
Feb 3

1. Read and follow the suggestions in St. Martin's, 52-57, for revising and editing draft 1 for Essay 1 and word process a coversheet and draft 2 for the assignment. There should be global changes from draft 1 to draft
2. Share your draft and coversheet with your peer group through your small group in the Discussion area by classtime on Peer Group Day. Upload both to your Peer Group in the Essay 1 DB [see link in Content under Essay 1 materials].
3. Review "Basic Requirements for Portfolio Assignments."
4. Have the following ready for peer group Response**:

(a) Coversheet for Essay 1 (See Content, Miscellaneous Forms)
(b) Draft 2 of Essay 1
(c) Both documents uploaded to your peer group in DB
(d) Corresponding Peer Feedback Sheet (See Content, Essay 1)

Week 4 Feb 6

DUE:
1. Review the suggestions of your peers for improving your Essay 1.
2. Read the Teachers Feedback Sheet for the essay, Contents, Essay 1, paying close attention to the points about purpose, audience, thesis, development, organization, and language usage.
3. Revise the coversheet and draft of Essay 1. There should be global changes from draft 1 to draft 2.
4. Bring to class for submission***:

(a) Teacher's Feedback Sheet--Essay 1 (Content, Essay 1)
b) Coversheet (revised if necessary)
(c) Draft 3 of Essay 1
(d) Peer Feedback

IN CLASS:
1. Final proofreading of Draft 3 of Essay 1 before submission
2. Students sign up for first conference (optional) with teacher.


Feb 8

DUE:
1. Read the assignment for Essay 2 and sample essay, see Content or Portfolio (29-33)
2. Read carefully the first half of chapter 3 in St. Martin's , Writing Profiles, pp. 64-69.
3. Write a list of the basic features of the essay genre that profiles a place or activity (i.e., what should it accomplish and include?) 67-68.
4. Write a list of possible topics for your own essay as suggested in the detailed essay assignment.
5. Begin reading & outlining all main ideas on the subject of interviewing, the first portion of St. Martin's chapter 22, pp.716-27.

Feb 10 DUE:
1. In your Essay 2 DB, post 1) your topic, 2) the name of the individual you will interview, 3) your tentative thesis, and 4) at least 5 interview questions.

IN-CLASS: Discussion of the Essay 2  Profiling a Place or Activity assignment, sample essays, and review of homework writing.

1. Students sign up for first conference with teacher (optional).
2. Students set up their interviews and observational visits.
Week 5 Feb 13 DUE:
1. Read the Guide to Writing for the essay (St. Martin's 99-109) and write all suggestions for finding a subject and developing a subject as instructed. Be sure to write for the recommended time limits! You should have several pages of invention writing to submit for homework credit.
2. Write your topic choice for Essay 2, the name and qualifications of the person you will interview, and at least five interview questions.
3. Begin reading and taking notes/outlining main ideas in the first portion of St. Martin's chapter 24 (755-65) Also look through the MLA Works Cited samples entries, pages 766-78, and find the entry for a personal interview. Copy the entry at the end of your chapter notes/outline.
4. Review your Chapter 22 notes/outline for the test.

IN CLASS:
1. Some time for students questions about reading material before the test.
2. Test 3 on St. Martin's chapter 22.
3. Submit topic choice for Essay 2 with name and qualifications of the person you will interview and at least five interview questions.
 
Feb 15
 NO CLASS--Optional STUDENT TEACHER CONFERENCES--Students meet individually with instructor as scheduled for a conference on Essay 1. Essay 1 returned for sentence-level corrections and revision.

DUE:
1. Conduct interviews and observational visits.
2. Continue reading and taking notes/outlining all main ideas on St. Martin's chapter 24.
Feb 17 NO CLASS--Optional STUDENT TEACHER CONFERENCES--Students meet individually with instructor as scheduled for a conference on Essay 1. Essay 1 returned for sentence-level corrections and revision.

DUE:

2. Continue reading and taking notes/outlining all main ideas on St. Martin's chapter 24.
Week 6 Feb 20 DUE:
1. Read and follow the guidelines for planning and writing draft for Essay 2  in St. Martin's, 109-13.
2. Review St. Martin's chapter 24 notes/outline for the test.

IN-CLASS:
1. Some time for students questions about reading material before the test
2. Test 4 on St. Martin's chapter 24 and Works Cited entry for a personal interview.
3. Workshop on Essay 3: purpose, thesis, and audience; quoting and citing an interview source
4. Post your final topic AND your thesis statement in the discussion forum for your peer group.

Feb 22
DUE:
1. Read and follow the suggestions in St. Martin's, 114-20 for revising and editing draft 1 for Essay 2 and type a coversheet and draft 2 for the assignment. There should be global changes from draft 1 to draft 2.
2. Complete sentence-level corrections for Essay 1 for HW credit.

IN-CLASS:
1. Workshop on using secondary sources in writing & interview techniques.
2. Work on Essay 2  Draft 1 in class.
Feb 24 DUE:
1. Share coversheet (Essay2CoversheetSmith) and draft (Essay2SmithPeer) to peer group by classtime.

Feb 29 DUE:
1. Review the suggestions of your peers for improving your Essay 2.
2. Read the Teachers Feedback for Essay 2 Content, Essay 2.
3. Revise coversheet and draft 2 of Essay 2 and name it draft 3. There should be global changes from draft 2 todraft3
4. Bring to class for submission***(see 2/8) and include written materials (brochures, pamphlets, etc.) used to write the essay with words quoted or paraphrased underlined or highlighted.
5. Begin reading and taking notes/outlining St. Martin's chapter 19 (659-72).

IN-CLASS:
1. Final proofreading of Draft 3 of Essay 2 before submission.
Mar 2 DUE:
1. Read the assignment for Essay 3 and sample essay, see Content or Portfolio (37-41).
2. Read carefully the first half of chapter 8 in St. Martin's, Justifying an Evaluation, including selected essays, 384-89 and 402-09
3. Write a list of the basic features of the essay genre that evaluates a subject for class discussion, 387-88.
4. Write a list of possible topics for your Essay 3: Justifying an Evaluation. You may NOT choose a person, a job or career as your subject.


IN-CLASS:

1. Discussion of the assignment for Essay 3: Justifying an Evaluation sample essays, and homework writing.

Week 8 Mar 12 DUE: BOTH INVENTION WRITING AND DRAFT 1 FOR ESSAY 3.

1. Read the Guide to Writing, St. Martin's (419-28) and do all invention writing as suggested. Be sure to write for the recommended time limits! You should have several pages of writing.
2. Read Planning and Drafting, St. Martin's (429-37) and write draft 1 for Essay 3.
3. Review your chapter 19 notes/outline for the test.

IN-CLASS:
1. Review of homework writing.
2. Work on Essay 3 Do you need to define, classify, compare/contrast? See St. Martin's chpts. 16, 17, 18.
3. Some time for students questions about the reading material before the test.
4. Test 5 St. Martin's chapter 19.
5. Students sign up for mandatory student/teacher conference.

Mar 14 DUE: Read and follow the suggestions in St. Martin's 437-42 for revising and editing draft 1 of Essay 3 and word process a coversheet for the assignment. There should be global changes from draft 1 to draft 2.

IN CLASS: Work on Essay 3 draft.

features of the essay genre that summarizes and responds (i.e., what should this type of essay accomplish and

3. Discussion of Essay 4 Summarizing & Responding assignment and essays read.
4. Workshop on Essay 4: Discussion of sample student essay Keeping Addicts Addicted: The Wrong Approach, Portfolio (47-51) and instruction on how to write a summary and how to quote and document a written source. Specifics about the collaborative aspect will be discussed.
5. Submit the two lists

1. Read and follow the suggestions for exploring and developing your subject for Essay 4 in Guide to Writing in Content (Portfolio 52-55). You should have several pages of invention writing to submit for homework credit.
2. Read and follow suggestions for planning and writing draft 1 of Essay 5 in Portfolio 30-31.
3. Complete Essay 3 sentence-level corrections for HW credit.

IN CLASS:
1. Read Portfolio 55-56 and work on draft 1 of Essay 4 and word process a coversheet.
2. Share Draft and coversheet with peer group by the end of class.
3. Submit Essay 3 sentence-level corrections for HW credit.

2. Read "The Introduction to a Successful Student Portfolio" (Portfolio 101) and the Sample Portfolio (103-116).
3. Review "Standards for Judging Student Portfolios" (Portfolio 9) and Final Portfolio Evaluation Form (249) in Content, Miscellaneous Forms.

IN CLASS:
1. Workshop on Editing for the Portfolio: Improving Your Prose Style for Portfolio Submissions/Grammatical and Mechanical Errors."
2. Begin revising essays for Final Portfolio. BRING: Drafts of Essays 1-3.
Apr 18 IN CLASS: Revision Workshop for Portfolio.
Apr 20 DUE: Final Portfolio. Be sure to complete Checklist to insure you have all the required items.
