Welcome.

Thank you for visiting the EYH Group Leaders Webpage.

MTSU students can either:

  • Apply for the EXL 2010 or 3010 class or
  • Simply apply as a volunteer group leader

You do not have to sign up for the class in order to volunteer.

The Group Leaders class 2010/3010 will be a fun, hands-on and interactive service-learning class.

This one hour service-learning class will provide students with:

  • One hour service-learning college credit (Wonderful Resume Item).
  • The opportunity to encourage girls to enter math and science careers.
  • The opportunity to serve as a role model and leader to middle school girls.
  • The chance to assist with professional workshops led by scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
  • Gaining experience for helping majors like education, social work, and human sciences as well as those interested in math and science careers.

SOME BASIC EYH INFORMATION:

EYH (Expanding Your Horizons) conferences are designed to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses and to encourage them to consider science and math-based career options such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science and physical science.

The MTSU EYH is held annually on the MTSU campus, co-hosted by AAUW (American Association of University Women) and Girl Scout Council of Cumberland Valley to promote math and science careers to girls in grades 5-8. Middle school girls participate in hands-on activities to learn and encourage their interest in math and science.

MTSU students are needed to serve as group leaders to supervise, escort and encourage girls in the various math and science workshops. This service-learning class would be for MTSU students in basic and applied science fields but also for those in the helping fields like education, human sciences, and social work.

FOR the EXL 2010 or 3010 college class for Fall 2007, students must:

  • Be available Mondays 4:10-5:10 until November 12
  • Be available from 7:30 am-3:30 pm on Saturday, October 27, 2007.
  • Be willing to engage in critical thinking and writing on why girls and women are the minority in math and science careers.
  • Discuss current research literature concerning girls’ attitudes and interests in the math and science fields.
  • Serve as a role model and leader to the middle school girls. Encourage and escort the girls as they attend workshops led by scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
