Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHAT IS THE DATE AND TIME OF EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS (EYH)?

EYH will meet on a Saturday in late September or October. The official date will be announced later in the year.

Group leaders will meet at the LRC building at 7:30 am and work until 3:30 pm on EYH day.

There are 300 middle school and 50 high school girls that attend the conference. 

WHAT MAJOR DO I NEED TO BECOME A GROUP LEADER?

Any major at MTSU is welcome.

Those in education, social work, human sciences, and math and science majors are highly encouraged to become group leaders.

CAN I BECOME A GROUP LEADER WITHOUT BEING IN THE CLASS?

Yes. You do not have to be in the class to become a group leader.

WHAT IS EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS (EYH)?

EYH (Expanding Your Horizons) conferences are designed to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses and to encourage them to consider science and math-based career options such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science and physical science.

The MTSU EYH is held annually on the MTSU campus, co-hosted by AAUW (American Association of University Women), MTSU Experiential Learning Program and the Expanding Your Horizons Network to promote math and science careers to girls in grades 5-12. Middle and high school girls participate in hands-on activities to learn and encourage their interest in math and science. 

WHAT DO GROUP LEADERS DO?

MTSU students are needed to serve as group leaders to supervise, escort and encourage girls in the various math and science workshops. They do not lead the math and science workshops but assist the workshop leaders, eat lunch with the middle school students, and help with registration and dismissal of students.

WHAT IS THE EYH CLASS?

The Group Leaders class 3010 will be a fun, hands-on and interactive service-learning class.

This one hour service-learning class will provide students with:

  • One hour service-learning college credit (Wonderful Resume Item).
  • The opportunity to encourage girls to enter math and science careers.
  • The opportunity to serve as a role model and leader to middle and high school girls.
  • The chance to assist with professional workshops led by scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
  • Gaining experience for helping majors like education, social work, and human sciences as well as those interested in math and science careers.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EYH CLASS?

FOR the EXL 3010  class, students must:

  • Be available Mondays 4:10-5:10 pm in Fall for class
  • Be available from 7:30 am-3:30 pm on EYH Saturday
  • Be willing to engage in critical thinking and writing on why girls and women are the minority in math and science careers.
  • Discuss current research literature concerning girls’ attitudes and interests in the math and science fields.
  • Serve as a role model and leader to the middle and high school girls.
  • Encourage and escort the girls as they attend workshops led by scientists, mathematicians and engineers

HOW DO I BECOME AN EYH GROUP LEADER?

Step One: Do the application

Complete an EYH volunteer application. Click the following link to view and print the application.

You must have an active email address where we can contact you.

Step Two-Wait while we review your application.

Typically, this takes 1-3 days.

After completing your application, your GPA will be verified. MTSU students must have at least at 2.0 Cumulative GPA and not on academic probation.

MTSU students must be in good standing with student affairs. A student affairs background check will be done at the time of your application. Students must not have any type of misconduct on their records to work with EYH.

In addition, MTSU students will be checked against the Sexual Offenders database.

Students will receive an email when their application is reviewed.

Step Three: Register for class or gain approval as a volunteer

We will get in touch with you by email and give you permission to either register for the EXL class or to work as a volunteer.
