Principal Outcomes of the Project

1. The development of outreach activities in squatter communities targeted at improving water, sanitation, health practices, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

2. The application of water modeling techniques to foster an equitable distribution of water resources in squatter communities, in keeping with sustainable urban development plans in Durban

3. The provision to policy makers of ongoing research findings which will assist in policy development issues such as urban environmental management in the Durban Metropolitan area.

Part A/ Title: Sustainable Environmental Management of Informal Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal Part B/Title:  Health Outreach Program in HIV/AIDS Prevention for Sustainable Management of Major Public Health Problems in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Year 1 (September 1999-September 2000)

Part A: Manager meeting at UDW, finalize surveys, research partners begin email planning, water data collection, MTSU faculty visits to discuss Internet course and health education program       Part B: Expand project to include HIV/AIDS prevention, project planning, begin materials design

Year 2 (October 2000 - September 2001)

Part A:  Develop Internet training modules, Faculty visits, UDW water modeling training, survey completion, Internet course

Part B: Focus group workshop at UDW, Selection of program leaders and peer educators, designing and adapting workshop materials to Zulu culture, on-site training

Year 3 (October 2001 - September 2002)

Parts A and B: Completion of all components and presentation of results at IGU conference at UDW in August 2002
