PURPOSE: This is a course on differential
calculus with an introduction to integral calculus. It is the first in a
sequence of three courses designed
to provide
the computational tools necessary for continued work in physics, engineering,
and more advanced mathematics. All three must be completed
to gain
thorough exposure to all the standard calculus topics.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course,
students will have used:
_ graphs and how
to extract information from them;
_ derivatives
and the means for calculating them;
_ limits and the
means for calculating them;
_ definite
and indefinite integrals and the means for calculating elementary examples;
_ classic
applications of differentiation;
_ some
advantages and limitations of current technology as applied to calculus.
COURSE REQUIREMENT: In order to complete this course successfully, the
learner is required to:
a. Attend class lectures
b. Participate in class activities
c. Read and study class assignments
d. Solve assigned problems sets
e. Successfully complete quizzes and tests
f. Use technology where appropriate.
Bring your graphing calculator to class each day.
This course consists of selected topics from Chapters 2,3,4, and 5.
COURSE EVALUATION:
Tests: Three major tests will be given throughout the semester. These tests will be worth 100 points each giving a total of 300 test points. There will be 5 quizzes given through the semester. These will be worth 30 points each. The lowest quiz score will be dropped giving a total of 120 quiz points. There are no makeups for missed tests or quizzes. If you have to miss a test because of a school function, see me to make arrangements to take the test before the scheduled test date. Please note: In order to be allowed to take a test, you must attend class on a regular basis.

Test 1: February 2, 2012
Test 2: February 28, 2012
Test 3: April 3, 2012
Final: A final exam will be given. The final is comprehensive. The final exam will be worth 200 points. Failure to take the final will result in an F for the final course grade.
Final exam date: Math 1910-003- Wednesday, May 2, 2012 7:30am-9:30pm
Math 1910-015- Monday, April 30, 2012 12:30am-2:30pm
Attendance grade: If you do not miss more than two days
during the semester, ten points will be added to your total points. I will
call roll at the first of each class. If
you come in late, it is your responsibility to inform me at the end of that
class. Three lates will count as one absence.

Math Help Lab:
Math tutoring is available as a free service to MTSU students in KOM 204 and KOM 252.
Tutoring is conducted by Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA’s), work study aids, and a faculty moderator.
Tutoring will be available starting September 7 with hours of operation to be determined.
The lab is closed on weekends and MTSU scheduled holidays. Days and times for tutoring specific
topics are posted on the bulletin board outside room KOM 252. Please sign in with your name, course
and instructor when you enter the lab. Forms for comments on your tutoring experience can be found at the
sign in table and turned in to the secretary in KOM 223D.
KOM 252 Tutorial Lab Schedule
Monday-Wednesday 8:00A-5:00P
Thursday 8:00A-4:00P
Friday 8:00A-12:00P
Please note the following dates and information:
•January 25, 2012 - Last day to drop without a grade.
•March 23, 2012 - Last day to drop with a "W".
• A grade of I will be given only in accordance
with the University Policy.
• If you have a disability that may require assistance or accommodation, or you
have
questions related to any accommodations for testing, note takers,
readers, etc.,
please speak with me as soon as possible. Students may also
contact the Office of
Disabled Students Services (898-2783) with questions about such
services.
•Do you have a lottery scholarship?
To retain Tennessee Education Lottery
Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24
and 48 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter. You
may qualify with a 2.75 cumulative GPA after 72 attempted hours (and subsequent
semesters), if you are enrolled full-time and maintain a semester GPA of at
least 3.0. A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact
TELS eligibility. Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact
eligibility; if you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment
status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery
scholarship. Lottery recipients are eligible to receive the scholarship for a
maximum of five years from the date of initial enrollment, or until a bachelor
degree is earned. For additional Lottery rules, please refer to your
Lottery Statement of Understanding form, review lottery requirements on the web
at http://scholarships.web.mtsu.edu/telsconteligibility.htm, or contact the
Financial Aid Office at 898-2830.
•Departmental Drop Policy: No grade of W will be assigned after the
official drop date except in situations involving extreme extenuating
circumstances beyond the student's control. In particular, a W will not
be granted merely because the student is failing. Students should be aware
that missing the official drop date and thereby receiving an F can have
ramifications on financial aid.
NOTE:
1. In order to be counted as present in a class, each student must
participate in class activities. Therefore, each student is required to
purchase the textbook and bring it to class every day. You will be
expected to use this textbook during class. You will also be expected to
take notes. Reading newspapers, books or working on other class homework
is not allowed in this math class.
2. If you must leave your cell phone on, please set it to vibrate mode and leave it closed. If you must answer your phone during class, please quietly leave the room to do so. Please do not send text messages or take pictures during class time.
3. Snow Policy:
If we have a test schedule and it snows, listen to the radio or TV.
If Rutherford County schools are canceled because of snow, then I
will reschedule the test for the next class meeting.
Unless MTSU is closed, class will meet, and we will cover the next
scheduled section.
(Note: Quizzes will be handled
on an individual basis. This
policy is for tests only.)
